The B.Sc. Hons course in Anthropology was started in Burdwan Raj College in 2018. Our college is among the very few in West Bengal to offer a dedicated UG course which tries to impact the learner with a thorough knowledge regarding different subfields of the subject like Physical or Biological Anthropology, Social-Cultural anthropology and Archaeological Anthropology as stipulated in the syllabus of Burdwan University.

Anthropology is considered as one among the highest scoring subject in UPSC and WBCS competitive examinations. Anthropology is also considered as a holistic disciple where expertise is born in field like forensic/criminology science, human genetics, bio-statistics, social-psychology, economic analysts, social sciences, archaeology field etc.

The undergraduate Anthropology course, besides enabling students to have a solid base of theoretical knowledge, also provides them with a perfect opportunity to go to fieldwork and testify some these theoretical propositions empirically.

Teaching methods followed in the department involves lectures, classroom seminars, group discussions, seminar lectures, fieldwork etc.

Facilities

Sufficient facilities are provided to the students for their fulfilment of CBCS curriculum in practical section (Biological laboratories). Several anthropometric instruments such as Martin’s spreading caliper, Martin’s sliding caliper, Anthropometric Rod compass, Tape, several fossil skulls/cranium/mandibles, adult human bones, weighing machines etc. are regularly used. Except these several stone tool artifacts for archaeological practical are also provided to learners.

Achievements

  • Since its inception in 2018, The Department of Anthropology has consistently produced consecutive top-ranking students under Burdwan University at the Undergraduate level.
  • Students are encouraged to take part in national/international projects. As a part of their curriculum, they undertake book review, journal review and article reviews.
  • Students have also undertaken an industrial project funded by Social Science of Research Council (SSRC), New York, which enhanced their vision and outlook on the subject.
  • Recently, students of our department successfully presented their work in an international seminar held in Tripura University, Tripura and published their work in a reputed international journal.
