The Department of Zoology of Burdwan Raj College was established in 1958 that was previously a Department of Biological Sciences since 1947. It is one of the premier and distinguished departments of the College and ranks high among the departments under the University of Burdwan.

Every year, admission of a young batch of students belonging to diverse social, financial, geographical background are our strength.

We have a vibrant and outstanding department equipped with computer/laptop that has plenty of classrooms with facility of teaching using audio-visual medium, a well-organized museum, a fully-equipped practical classroom and above all a group of dynamic, energetic faculty and spirited instructors and non-teaching staffs.

As per the syllabus, numerous visits to the Zoological Parks and Sanctuaries have increased the ideas of the students. Students’ seminars are regularly organized. Internal assessments are held to let the students prepare for their future.

In the coming years, we plan to focus in our teaching strength who will train our students to develop their competence in the present situation. In the future days, we will try to create more opportunities to the best of our capacity to attract the best talent of our nearby region. Vision: The vision of this department is to continue serving as a pioneering College serving Burdwan and neighbouring regions as well as the rest of the state through the pursuit of excellence in teaching and innovations aided by the quality and experienced members of the faculty.

Mission: Our plan is to execute the previously mentioned vision with the following distinct missions:

[1] To promote a greater number of students to the higher education and research in the national and international premier institutes.

[2] In line with the scope of new CBCS syllabus prescribed by UGC and the University of Burdwan, students are encouraged to find suitable opportunities so that they become economically self-dependent. This is the thrust area of our department.

Over the past several decades, this department has produced several world-class alumni and this justifies the reputation. We have an extensive list of alumni who have qualified in the various prestigious national level exams including CSIR-NET, GATE, SET, even at UG level exams such as JAM, BHU entrance test etc. and have settled down in various esteemed national and international institutes and universities.

This Department also holds the unique distinction of producing university rank holders uninterruptedly ever since its inception. A high percentage of our students get placement through SSC, MSC, NET, SET and other establishments both in private and public sectors. Most of the rank holders of the University of Burdwan both at the UG and PG levels hail from this Department.

Our teachers have published papers in peer reviewed journals including edited volumes, got a UGC Minor Research Project and was involved in UNICEF sponsored project works.
