As a constituent Department of the College, the history of the Department of English dates back to the establishment of the College in 1881 with the introduction of General Course which was subsequently upgraded to Hons Course in the year 1927. The Department offers a mix of experienced, young, and energetic faculty who steer the responsibility of academic as well as administrative work with equal zeal, keeping an eye all the while to the holistic development of learners as their prime goal.
The English Department is focused on the ‘Es’ for the holistic development of every leaner:
Our objectives are based on three ‘Ps’:
We always prioritize the four ‘Fs’:
As one of the oldest departments of the College, the English department has consistently shown high standards of excellence. We receive students of high merit not only from Burdwan and surrounding areas, but many of them come from neighbouring districts and far-flung areas as well, in search of quality education. Their consistent performance -- aided by the experienced and energetic faculty, regular holding of classes and tutorials, free and fair interactions, assessment through continuous internal examinations -- is reflected through meritorious results in university examinations. A considerable number of our pass outs get employment through various national/state/regional level tests.
Apart from their pursuit for academic excellence, our students share a close and healthy relationship with the members of the faculty helping them to work as a well-knit and cohesive unit the reflection of which is found in different co-curricular and extracurricular activities organised by the department.
Our teachers are always alive to diverse academic, psychological, and other needs of our students and the different challenges they face in and outside the classroom. We are never hesitant to offer them counselling and need-based support.
Down the years the Department has produced a galaxy of successful professionals in diverse fields ranging from academia to administrative and social service.
Most of the students graduating from this department find admission to post graduate courses in different prestigious institutions across the country. Their continuous pursuit for excellence is revealed through their subsequent engagement in research studies and placement in various HEIs through consistent performance in examinations such as NET/SET/GATE etc.
Every year quite a few of our pass outs prefer pursuing professional courses such as B.Ed. and M.Ed. to further their employment opportunities while others choose administrative and allied services as their career goal. Many of our recent graduates have been successfully employed through different public service examinations in administrative, judicial, banking, railways, and other sectors as well.
