DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

Department of History

Ms. Dhira Roy Mukhopadhyay, (M.A., MPhil.)

Head of the Department

The department of History is one of the most popular and pioneering Departments of Burdwan Raj College. Its emergence as a separate entity took place in 1958, when Honours course was introduced. Since then, it has come a long way in popularizing History both as a discipline and a career-building department for residents in and around Bardhaman.

The department monitors overall performance of students through regular assessments, evaluating the leaners’ progress regularly through Class Tests, Assignments and Projects. Tutorial classes, popular lectures with interactions, quiz contests, group discussions are regularly held. Parents-Teachers meets, Remedial classes and Educational Excursions are undertaken as per schedule. The most notable feature of the Department is the cordial teacher-student relationship.

Teachers of the Department update themselves attending libraries, Orientation Courses, Refresher Courses, Seminars and Workshops. The Department, within its limited resources, also organizes Seminars and workshops.

Every year we get a good number of sincere students who perform well in the University Examinations. Many of our ex-students are engaged in University, Colleges, Schools, playing active part in different social services. Some are also engaged in different administrative capacities, placed in Government and non-Government jobs.

The Department boasts of a Seminar Library, the first of its kind along with a museum which was founded on 21st February 2015.

The Department has a future plan to obtain the allotment of an ISBN/ ISSN so that the Department may issue its own journals to which contributions by eminent academicians, researchers and teachers, may be sought. The Department also intends to organize regular Seminars/ Conferences, inviting eminent academicians to deliver special lecturers.

Consistent academic performance is the hallmark our Department. Besides studies, many of our students are actively engaged in NCC/NSS. They also participate in Annual College Social Programme where they exhibit their own hand-made charts, posters, data-sheets, models, drawings handicrafts to explain a relevant theme for public knowledge and thereby create mass awareness. It develops their thinking and power of imagination. They regularly participate in Annual Sports, Quiz Contests, Debate Competitions etc.

It is a matter of great joy for the Department to organize a few educational excursions like the one to Delhi-Agra-Jaipur, Nalanda-Rajgir (2012), Puri-Konark etc. Students along with departmental teachers visited Bandel Church and Hooghly Imambara (2004), Chandannagar (2005), Vishnupur (2008), Murshidabad (2014), Maithan-Kalyaneswari Temple (2015), Mukutmanipur Dam (2018), Garh Panchocot (Purulia) and Panchet Dam (2019).
